ACCA Business & Technology (BT) is one of the three papers at the Applied Knowledge level of the ACCA Qualification, and many students start their ACCA journey with it. It introduces how businesses work, but questions test whether you can apply concepts, not just recall them.
At CICA, we see the same pattern every session. Students who pass are usually the ones who practise regularly, analyse their mistakes, and revise the weak areas, not the ones who simply read the most.
This guide gives you a clear, chapter-wise plan for ACCA Business & Technology, plus free practice tests to check your progress.
ACCA Business & Technology Exam Format
Know the format before you start practising:
- BT is an on-demand, computer-based exam lasting 2 hours and marked out of 100, and the pass mark is 50%.
- Section A has 46 objective test questions (16 worth one mark and 30 worth two marks). Section B has 6 multi-task questions worth four marks each.
- Each multi-task question in Section B is specific to one syllabus area, with no crossover between the six sections of the syllabus.
- All questions are compulsory, so you cannot skip a syllabus area and hope it doesn’t appear.
The same paper is called FBT at the Foundations in Accountancy level. ACCA publishes one combined syllabus and study guide for BT/FBT.
What Does the ACCA BT Syllabus Cover?
The syllabus covers:
- Business organisations, stakeholders and the external environment
- Organisational structure, functions and governance
- Accounting and reporting systems, controls and compliance
- Leading and managing individuals and teams
- Personal effectiveness and communication
- Professional ethics in accounting and business
ACCA has published the BT/FBT syllabus and study guide for September 2026 to June 2027, applicable from 1 September 2026. Always study from the latest version on ACCA’s website.
Important Update: ACCA Qualification Changes in 2027
If you are planning for BT, you should know about the 2027 redesign of the ACCA Qualification.
- June 2027 is the final session for the current Applied Skills and Strategic Professional exams.
- In the redesigned Knowledge level, BT is removed. The new papers are K1 Financial Accounting, K2 Management Accounting and K3 Business Law.
- A completed BT exam gives transition credit for the Responsible Business Management module.
- ACCA has released a Transition Tool to map your current progress.
What this means for you: If you are starting ACCA now, BT is still part of your current pathway, so plan it early. Before booking your exam, check ACCA’s official website and Transition Tool for the latest dates and rules.
Why Practice Matters More Than Just Reading
Reading the study text builds understanding. But the exam is objective and time-bound. Regular practice helps you:
- Find the chapters you only think you know
- Get used to ACCA-style wording and options
- Improve speed. With 100 marks in 2 hours, you have roughly 1.2 minutes per mark
- Feel comfortable with the computer-based exam interface
Your Chapter-Wise ACCA BT Practice Plan
Step 1: Study in Chapter Groups
Divide the syllabus into blocks. CICA’s Practice Zone splits it into nine chapter-wise tests:
- Business Organisations & Business Environment (Ch 1-2)
- Legal & Macro Economic Environment (Ch 3-4)
- Microeconomics & Organisation Structure (Ch 5-6)
- Culture, Governance & CSR (Ch 7-8)
- Accounting, Control, Security & Audit (Ch 9-10)
- Fraud, Leading & Managing (Ch 11-12)
- Individuals, Teams & Motivation (Ch 13-14)
- Training & Performance Appraisal (Ch 15-16)
- Personal Effectiveness & Ethics (Ch 17-18)
Step 2: Test Yourself After Every Block
Take the chapter test right after finishing each block, while the topics are fresh.
Step 3: Analyse Every Mistake
For each wrong answer, ask: Did I not know the concept? Did I misread the question? Did I run out of time? Note the reason and revise that point.
Step 4: Attempt a Full-Syllabus Mock
Once all chapter tests are done, sit a full mock under exam conditions: a 2-hour timer, no notes, no distractions.
Step 5: Revise, Then Take a Final Mock
Use your first mock’s results to fix weak areas and clear doubts. Then attempt a fresh full-syllabus paper to confirm you are exam-ready.
Common Mistakes in ACCA BT Preparation
- Skipping areas: Every syllabus area is examined, and all questions are compulsory.
- Not reading the question carefully: Many questions are short scenarios where one word changes the answer.
- Practising without analysis: A mock you don’t review teaches you very little.
- Memorising definitions without applying them: Be ready to use them in scenarios.
- Leaving mocks to the last week: Start chapter tests early.
