ACCA has officially announced a complete redesign of its qualification structure the biggest change to the qualification in years. The new structure begins in July 2027 for the Knowledge level and September 2027 for the Expertise and Strategic Professional levels.

What is the ACCA 2027 Qualification Change — The Summary

The 4 Key Changes Every Student Must Understand

Change 1: Papers Reduced from 13 to 11

The total number of ACCA papers is reducing from 13 to 11.

Here is exactly what is being removed or restructured:

BT (Business Technology): is being phased out at the Knowledge level. The new Knowledge level will have 3 papers — but BT in its current form will not be among them.

Strategic Professional reduces from 4 to 3 papers: Currently, students must pass 2 compulsory papers (SBL and SBR) plus 2 optional papers. Under the new structure — students pass SBL and SBR plus only 1 optional paper from an expanded choice of 5 specialisms.

Important for students who have already passed 2 optional papers:
If you have already passed 2 optional papers under the current structure, you have completed the optional paper requirement under the new structure, which only requires 1. This is a significant advantage for students near the end of their qualification.

Change 2: New 4 Level Structure

The current 3-level structure becomes 4 levels:

Level 1: Foundations (New Entry Route)
An optional entry pathway for students who do not meet the standard Class 12 direct entry criteria. This replaces the current FIA route with a more structured pathway.

Level 2: Knowledge (3 Papers)
Equivalent to the current Applied Knowledge level. MA and FA carry forward. BT is phased out in its current form.

Level 3: Expertise (5 Papers)
This is the renamed Applied Skills level, now reduced from 6 to 5 papers. Current papers TX, FR, AA, FM and PM map to the new E1 to E5 Expertise papers. One current Applied Skills paper is absorbed into the broader restructure.

Level 4: Strategic Professional (3 Papers)
Same name. SBL and SBR remain compulsory. Optional papers reduce from 2 to 1 — but the choice of specialisms expands from 4 to 5 with the addition of Data Science Professional.

Change 3: New Compulsory Employability Modules at Every Level

This is one of the most significant additions in the 2027 structure.

Essential Employability Modules (EEM) are being introduced at every level of the qualification. These are mandatory not optional.

EEM covers:

• Professional skills and communication
• Digital and technology competencies
• Ethics and professional judgement
• Sustainability and ESG awareness
• Data literacy and analytical thinking

These modules run alongside the exam papers and must be completed at each level before progressing.

Change 4: New Content Areas Embedded Throughout

Artificial Intelligence and Technology
Every level now includes AI application in accounting and finance contexts, understanding how AI tools impact financial reporting, audit, and decision-making.

ESG and Sustainability
Environmental, Social, and Governance reporting is now embedded throughout the qualification rather than appearing selectively. This reflects the mandatory ISSB sustainability disclosure standards taking effect globally.

Data Analytics
Data science and analytics competencies are woven through the Expertise and Strategic Professional levels, preparing students for modern finance roles that require data interpretation alongside accounting knowledge.

New Optional Paper: Data Science Professional
A brand new optional paper at the Strategic Professional level. This is a direct response to the growing demand for finance professionals who understand data science in a business context.

The Critical Transition Dates Every Student Must Know

The most important date: June 2027

This is confirmed from the official ACCA transition timeline at accaglobal.com — “Final sitting of Applied Skills and Strategic Professional Exams. After this exam session, students transition to the future ACCA Qualification.”

After June 2027, there are no further sittings of the current Applied Skills or Strategic Professional papers.

What Happens to Papers You Have Already Passed

This is the question every current student is asking.

Official ACCA confirmation:
Every paper passed under the current structure carries forward automatically to the new qualification with no resit and no application needed.

You do not lose any progress. Every pass you have earned to date counts in full.

Two specific advantages for current students:

1. If you have passed 2 optional papers already
   You have already met the optional paper requirement under the new structure, which only requires 1. This means you are ahead of where the new structure would require you to be.
2. If you have passed BT already
   BT is being phased out. If you have passed it, it counts. If you have not, you will not need to sit it under the new structure.

Should You Continue Now or Wait for the New Structure?

Reason 1: June 2027 is not far away
You have March 2027 and June 2027 left under the current structure. That is two sittings — enough for 2 to 4 more papers with focused preparation.

Reason 2: The current structure is familiar
You already know the syllabus, the exam style, and the past paper patterns. The new Expertise level papers will have updated content and new assessment approaches from September 2027 onwards.

Reason 3: All passes carry forward
There is no penalty for finishing under the current structure. Every paper you pass before June 2027 transfers automatically to your new qualification record.

Reason 4: New structure means new uncertainties
The first sittings of the new Expertise and Strategic Professional exams in September 2027 will have no past papers, no examiner reports, and no proven pass rate history. Sitting those early sittings carries higher uncertainty than finishing under the current structure.

The smartest strategy:
Complete as many remaining papers as possible in March 2027 and June 2027. Finish under the structure you know. If any papers remain after June 2027 — you will transition to the new equivalent paper with full credit for everything already passed.
